Unlocking Success Through a Reading Habit

Read time: 2 minutes

Welcome back to The Leap! A newsletter to help individuals and businesses take their productivity to the next level.

I wanted to give a warm welcome to the 89 people who joined us since last week. Most of you came from downloading the Notion Book Vault I gave away on Twitter & LinkedIn.

If you haven’t snagged it yet, it’s free and will take your reading to the next level. Keep track of your favorite quotes, write down quick thoughts, review the books you read, and add books to your reading list.

Speaking of books and reading, let’s jump into why reading is such a powerful habit to develop.

Read More, Achieve More

Successful people read books. It’s one of their significant habits.

Here’s some interesting research from Tom Corley:

  • Those who read at least 7 books per year earn 2.3 times more than people who only read 1 or 0 books per year.

  • 88% of wealthy people devote 30 minutes or more daily to reading.

  • Reading can reduce stress by up to 68%.

So what is it about reading that leads to greater success, wealth, and all around well-being?

As you read, you’ll discover more ideas and strategies you can apply. Whatever you want to achieve in life, there is an endless supply of books that will teach you how to do that.

Want to develop happy and healthy relationships? There are books for that.
Want to be happy and fulfilled? There are books for that.
Want to learn how to become financially free? There are books for that.

You’ll notice I bolded and underlined the word apply above. That’s the key.

My favorite way to apply what I read is to have a place to write down my favorite quotes and thoughts. That’s where the inspiration for the Notion Book Vault template came from.

I was tired of reading books and then a couple of months later not being able to remember what I had read or learned. This Notion template fixes that problem.

If you want to see the template in action, I made this quick video showing how I use it.

The How

It’s clear the benefits that come from reading. But how do we find the time to do it?

We live in a time where people are busier than ever and have more distractions than ever.

I have just 1 piece of advice:

Value the minutes, not just the hours.

People think they need a big block of uninterrupted time to accomplish something.

I know I’m guilty of this. I’ve only got 10 minutes before I need to leave so I’ll just scroll through Instagram.

But the truth is that there are minutes hidden in all the corners of the day, and they add up to a lot of minutes.

I recently discovered out that if you read just 15 minutes every day, you’d consume over 1,000,000 words per year.

One or two paragraphs of value can transform your life, never mind a million words!

Here are just a few sentences I’ve read recently that have provided tremendous value:

  • “The good news is that in business, you only need to hit one grand slam offer to retire forever.”

  • “Success is the product of daily habits — not once in a lifetime transformations”

  • “Action and growth compound, but so do fear and comfort. You’re either compounding forward or backward. You choose.”

Analyze your life and see where you can value the minutes better. Everyone can find at least 15 minutes.

I’m excited to see what your 1,000,000 words does for you.

That’s it for this week.
