Accountability Habits

The 2 step formula to build good habits

Read time: 3 minutes

Welcome back to The Leap! A newsletter to help individuals and businesses take their productivity to the next level.

I wanted to give a warm welcome to the 49 people who joined us since last week. Thanks for being here! But right now, I need all of your help.

I need your feedback on what type of content you’d like to see more of in this newsletter. Here are the two options, and then you can vote below:

  1. Notion - More content specific to Notion templates, how to become more productive with Notion, how to utilize Notion for your business, etc.

  2. General Productivity - Content that covers productivity broadly. Stories, principles, case studies, etc.

Thank you! Now let’s jump into it.

p.s. I have an excellent free Notion resource at the end. But make sure you read everything first, so it makes sense!

Accountability Habits

This year I set a goal to read at least one book every month. I knew that to accomplish this, I’d need to develop a daily reading habit.

It’s been one of the favorite habits I’ve developed.

The book I’ve been reading in March is Atomic Habits by James Clear. It’s such a solid book! It’s packed with good information about the power of habits and how to develop them.

There are two key points that that will help you develop the habits you want.

  1. Track your habits

  2. Report your performance to someone

These two points can best be summarized with Pearson’s Law: “What is measured, improves. That which is measured and reported improves exponentially.”

Here’s why these two points work so well:

Track Your Habits

When you track your habits, you have increased awareness. When you see your habits in front of you daily, you start to recognize patterns and see areas you need to improve.

I recently noticed in my Notion habit tracker that I was missing more and more days of reading. I quickly recognized that the time of day I was trying to read was a bad fit.

I simply changed my reading habit to the morning rather than night and it made all the difference.

You’ll never have the data/analytics to make informed decisions until you track performance.

Report Your Performance

The best way to report your performance is with an accountability partner. This can be a friend, family member, coworker, etc.

The key to picking a good accountability partner is finding someone with similar aspirations, goals and wants to improve as much as you do.

By adding an accountability partner to your life, you’re increasing your odds of success (by a lot).

The American Society of Training and Development found that people are 65 percent more likely to meet a goal after committing to another person. Their chances of success increase to 95 percent when they build ongoing meetings with their partners to check in on their progress.

95 PERCENT!

The mere fact that most people avoid accountability is a powerful reason to create LOTS of it in your life.

The How:

We can significantly increase our success by tracking our habits and using an accountability partner.

That’s why I’ve created a free Notion template that does both. With this template, you’ll be able to:

  • Choose the habits you want to develop and track your progress.

  • Both you and your accountability partner will be able to track each other’s progress.

  • Have a weekly reflection on how well you stuck to your habits. Your accountability partner can review this and add suggestions/comments.

You can get the template by clicking the image below! Once you download the template, there will be more instructions on properly using it.

If you find the template valuable, please leave me a review. It helps me very much!

Now go find your accountability partner and increase your success by 95%.

That’s it for this week.
